The Kimpton Armory Hotel — Downtown Bozeman’s Luxury Wedding Venue
The Kimpton Armory Hotel is the most impressive event venue in downtown Bozeman — and it’s not particularly close. A restored 1941 National Guard armory turned luxury boutique hotel, it’s the tallest building on Main Street with 121 rooms, three on-site restaurants, a rooftop bar with mountain views, and a 4,752-square-foot music hall that makes every other ballroom in town feel like a conference room.
If you want a wedding where everything is under one roof — getting ready, ceremony, reception, after-party, and guest rooms — the Armory is one of the only venues in the Bozeman area that can pull that off at a high level. It’s also pet-friendly and wheelchair accessible, which is worth knowing.

The History
The original building was completed in 1941 as home to the 163rd Infantry Regiment of the Montana National Guard. It was designed by Fred Willson — the same architect behind the Baxter Hotel, the Ellen Theatre, the Rialto, and the Gallatin County Courthouse. The man basically built downtown Bozeman.
The Armory featured maple floors, 18-inch-thick concrete walls, a soundproofed band room, and a rifle range in the basement. It served the National Guard until 2003, then sat empty for nearly a decade before being purchased in 2012 and transformed into what it is today — a luxury hotel built on top of the original two-story fortress. Opened in 2020, it’s now the tallest building in downtown Bozeman.
Event Spaces & Features
The Armory has more event spaces than most venues have rooms. Here’s what you’re working with:
Armory Music Hall — The main event. 4,752 square feet with 22-foot ceilings, the original 1941 stage, a built-in bar, and a mezzanine level. Seats up to 336 for a banquet dinner or holds 500 for a standing reception. Fully soundproofed with a state-of-the-art sound system, so your live band can go as loud as they want without bothering hotel guests upstairs. This room is genuinely stunning.
Sky Shed — The rooftop venue. 1,989 square feet of glass-enclosed space with panoramic mountain views. Great for ceremonies, cocktail hours, or farewell brunches. Natural light for days.
Tune Up — The underground whiskey bar. 1,318 square feet of moody, low-lit atmosphere. Perfect for rehearsal dinners or after-parties. The vibe down here is completely different from the rest of the hotel — in a good way.
True North — A 911-square-foot second-floor space that seats up to 72 banquet-style. Works well for bridal luncheons, welcome parties, or breakout spaces.
Etha — A 598-square-foot second-floor room with sliding glass walls. Seats 36 for a dinner, holds 60 for a reception. Nice for intimate rehearsal dinners or bridal showers.
There’s also the Nelson Boardroom, the Presidential Suite with Parlor (1,237 sq ft — great for getting ready), and a couple of smaller meeting rooms if you need even more space.
Weddings at the Armory
What makes the Armory work so well for weddings is that you can host your entire wedding weekend without anyone leaving the building. Here’s a typical timeline I’ve seen couples use:
- Welcome cocktails: Sky Shed rooftop — mountain views, drinks, first impressions
- Rehearsal dinner: Tune Up basement whiskey bar — intimate, moody, great food
- Getting ready: Presidential Suite or hotel rooms — spacious, great light
- Ceremony + reception: Armory Music Hall — up to 336 seated or smaller for a more intimate layout
- After-party: Tune Up or Sky Shed — keep the night going
- Farewell brunch: Sky Shed rooftop the next morning
Catering is handled by the hotel’s culinary team at Fielding’s, and they offer buffet, plated, family-style, cocktail reception, and station setups. Bar service starts at $26 per person and includes house beer and wine, open bar options, premium liquor, signature cocktails, and a champagne toast.
The site fee includes tables, chairs, linens, flatware, china, glassware, event planning support, setup, and cleanup. That’s a lot of stuff you don’t have to rent separately.

Photographer’s Take
I’ve shot weddings at the Armory and it’s one of my favorite venues in Bozeman to work in. The Music Hall is a photographer’s dream — the 22-foot ceilings, the original stage, the architectural details from 1941 all create a backdrop that’s dramatic without trying too hard. The mezzanine gives you a great vantage point for overhead reception shots.
The Sky Shed rooftop is where I send couples for portraits when the light is right — panoramic mountain views, natural light, and you don’t have to leave the building. The Tune Up basement is surprisingly photogenic too — the moody lighting and whiskey-bar aesthetic make for great bridal party shots that feel completely different from the rest of the day.
The biggest practical advantage? Everything is on-site. No shuttles, no driving between venues, no logistics headaches. Couples are noticeably more relaxed when they don’t have to worry about moving 200 people across town, and that always shows in the photos.
