Sophia & Ashton: A Woodland Wedding at Summer Star Ranch

Last updated on September 10th, 2026 at 05:15 pm

Sophia and Ashton were going for a woodland fantasy. That was the actual phrase they used, right after admitting the whole thing started on Pinterest. What it turned into was a ceremony on the forest floor under ponderosa pines, a wine barrel where the altar table would normally be, and a reception in a barn lit wall to wall with string lights.

They got married at Summer Star Ranch outside Helena on May 25. When I asked what they wanted the day to feel like, the answer was “natural, authentic, celebratory, excitable, magical.” That is a lot to ask of one Monday. They got all five.

Why they picked Summer Star Ranch

Their reasoning was two sentences long and both halves turned out to matter: “We LOVED the woodland ceremony site. And the lights in the barn are beautiful.”

That is the thing about this property. It gives you two completely different rooms without either of them being indoors by default. The ceremony ground sits back in the pines where the light comes down filtered instead of flat. The barn takes over once the sun goes, and it does the work for you. Most venues around Helena give you one setting and ask you to make it carry the whole day.

Two first looks

The first was with her Bridesmaids

The second was with her father. They spent sometime praying before heading to the ceremony.

The ceremony

Four thirty, on the woodland side. Guests came in off the drive and sat on benches and chairs set straight onto the pine needles, close enough to hear everything.

After the procession, the whole wedding opened by singing the doxology together. This heartfelt, Christ-centered ceremony ended with communion before their vows at a wine barrel standing in the aisle.

The letters

Every single guest found a hand-written letter waiting at their seat in the barn. Not a place card with a nice line on it. A letter, to them, from the two people getting married. If you have ever wondered what the phrase “worth the effort” looks like on a wedding day, it is a couple writing well over a hundred letters in the weeks before their own wedding.

Trees and mountains

When I asked where they wanted portraits, the answer was “as long as we have trees and mountains, we’re happy.” Summer Star has both within a few minutes of each other, so we used the pines while the ceremony light was still around and then walked out into the open meadow for the end of the day.

This is the kind of sky you dream of when you think golden hour!

The barn after dark

Dinner was 202 BBQ. The Jitter Buggy Coffee Cart ran the social hour, and Sophia had flagged them in advance as the vendor she was most excited about, which is not a sentence you often read about coffee.

Speeches at quarter to seven, from her father, the best man, the matron of honor and then Ashton. Cake at twenty past.

They told me the first dance was the part they wanted to wow people with, that it was not choreographed, and that they were hoping to pull off some lifts. That is either going to work or it is not, and there is no version where it is boring.

It worked. The song was “Lucky To Love You” by Harrison Boe.

After that the floor opened and somebody brought out foam light sticks, and the room stopped being a wedding reception and started being a party.

One of my favorite suprises was when Sophia and her siblings preformed a dance for the guests.

One more dance, then sparklers

Near the end they cleared the barn and had a private last dance, just the two of them in the room where the whole evening had happened. Sophia had asked for that on the timeline months earlier. It is the picture I would have fought to keep if they had cut something.

Then everyone lined the gravel with sparklers, because sparklers are only allowed on the gravel here, and that was the night.
