Maddy & Nico: An Easy-Going, Sentimental Wedding at Fort Missoula’s Heritage Hall

Maddy and Nico got married on August 1, 2026, at Heritage Hall at Fort Missoula. When I asked for a few words to describe the day they wanted, they gave me three: easy-going, fun and sentimental. They had the whole venue for the weekend, so everything happened in one place, from getting ready to the reception.
Getting ready at the Fort
Heritage Hall has two getting-ready rooms downstairs. Maddy took the larger one with her bridesmaids, and Nico took the smaller one with his groomsmen. When I asked about heirlooms or details they wanted captured, the answer was one of my favorites: “Everything is new to us, so whatever you get, we will be happy with.” Nico did have one detail he cared about: the words stitched inside his suit jacket, and the moment he put it on.

Short, sweet and their own words
They described the ceremony as “pretty short but sweet, traditional,” with vows they wrote themselves, “and that’s about it for rituals, haha.” It was also the part of the day that mattered most to them: “the ceremony feels the most important, the rest is just a fun celebration of that.”

Their wedding party was a big one, 14 people counting the kids, and Nico had two best men: his best friend and his eldest brother.

Candid over posed
Neither of them wanted a day of stiff, posed photos. Maddy likes candid pictures more than the traditional “look at the camera and smile,” and Nico wanted the photos “to feel sentimental,” candid too. They didn’t have a list of must-have photo spots and were happy to let me find them around the fort. Their one request: “If possible, it would be pretty to get photos while the sun is setting.”

From the lawn to the hall
Cocktail hour happened outside, on the same lawn as the ceremony. After a few more photos, they opened the doors of Heritage Hall and let everyone in for the reception.

Bea Paxson ran the music and emceed the night. Speeches came from their parents, the maid of honor and the best man, and the night included a father-daughter dance, a mother-son dance and cake cutting. Their first dance was to “Count on Me” by Joy Oladokun.

When I asked what they expected from their photos, Nico put it simply: “We just want pictures to remember the day by.” He also said something I think every couple should hear: “We know it will not be exactly like what has been previously done because the venue and our day is unique to us.”
