Lifestyle vs Portrait Photography 2

Lifestyle vs Portrait Photography

Do you really need to hire a photographer? I’m being serious. You have an extremely powerful camera in your pocket so why would you even hire someone? Honestly, you don’t if you just want a Christmas Card picture it is not worth the cost. Anyone can take that photo. Sure a photographer has a better camera but does that even matter?

I think this is why I fell in love with lifestyle photography. Every time I would capture a family in a traditional portrait I felt that anyone could do it and that it didn’t even show who the clients were because every photo shoot was the same. So why Lifestyle photography?

Lifestyle Photography Captures What You Remember

Do you honestly remember your family members with nicely combed hair in a dress shirt with a big “cheese” smile? Of course not! You remember the little things. Having breakfast, cuddling on the couch, Your kid’s running around like crazy people yelling at the top of their lungs. In lifestyle photography, I am able to step in and capture your life. You don’t have to stop to pull out your phone to capture your son giving the dog a hug. You are able to be in the moment and be who you are.

Lifestyle Photography Captures Who YOU Are

I remember getting my senior photos back in high school and not recognizing the person in the photos. All my acne was cleaned up, I had a big smile. While I looked really good, it wasn’t me.  In a lifestyle shoot, I will never tell you how to be. I don’t know who you are, so how can I expect to create a photo that exemplifies you. My job is to see. Not to come in with preconceived notions and ideas of how to make you look good but to see the beauty of who you are, because at the end of the day, if I do my job the photos will mean more to you than me.

Screw the Portfolio

A lifestyle shoot will never get me a ton of likes. If I post a classic “Pinterest”  photo on social media I will no doubt get tons of likes, but it’s not about me. My job is to serve the client. Lifestyle photos don’t help me as a photographer build me up, but that doesn’t matter when a client tells me how they will treasure the photos for the rest of their life.
